PREFACE
Words from Mr Yau Yin Kwun Joseph
It has always been my dream to be a practising accountant since
my youth. As my lifelong interest, I have been encountering and
immersing myself in accounting for my entire life. First back in
Grade 9 in Hong Kong, I completed my intermediate-level LCCI
bookkeeping examinations; in Grade 11, I selected accounting as
my elective in Vancouver; in 1982, I graduated from the University
of British Columbia with a BCom major in accounting and
information system and started working in Au Yeung Yik Fung, my
beloved mentor’s accounting firm and subsequently qualified as
a Chartered Accountant in Canada. It was until 1985 when I
returned to Hong Kong and stepped on my journey as a practising
accountant.
I adore accounting, not because of those complex numbers, but the excitement and fulfilment
of assisting my clients. I always compare my profession to medical doctors, examining each
client’s situation through their accounts, finding the right antidote to “cure sickness” and
eventually solve the problem. The sense of joy and achievement is what I really love and care
about, and this passion becomes the underlying motivation for the company’s continuous
improvement and expansion.
As a management level in a company which has thrived for sixty years, I set development
blueprints every decade to keep expanding the company. We merged with various accounting
firms, forged long-term collaborations with important clients like securities firms,
conglomerates and law firms, thus gradually building reputation by word of mouth. Business
expansion aside, CKY has provided job opportunities to its new recruits by appointing them on
their merits, as we believe it is our social responsibility as one of the pioneer accounting firms
in Hong Kong, and for the good of the industry's tomorrow.
As the leader of CKY, I have to act swiftly to adapt to new changes in society which is a profound
challenge. The rise of Information Technology and other new industries have made accounting
less popular. When jobs are slowly being taken over under digitalisation, it creates
unprecedented pressure on the industry. Besides, in the foreseeable future, the auditing work
of SMEs may be phased out and cause potential business losses. I, with my management team
and staff, will stand strong and plan ahead to overcome these hardships.
Being truthful and compassionate by stepping in your client’s shoes are the key to stay intact in
the accounting industry. Being centred and mindful are the key to face the distresses and
disruptions created by the ever-changing era. In this industry, the journey is like a marathon-if
you are miles behind from your opponents, you would not be able to catch up; only if you stay
at the forefront with the leading group of the race and follow closely, you would be able to
maintain your position in the crowd.
Last but not the least, from staying strong under the challenging pandemic in the past year, to
finishing up this memoir for the company’s 60th anniversary, with everyone’s assistance and
perseverance we prevailed; and along with the overwhelming support to the company’s success
over the past sixty years, here is my sincere gratitude to every respectable client, professional
organisations, bank partners, law firm associates and my fellow staff.
